Kathleen Brahney comes to botanical art with a background in French literature, an undergraduate minor in art and career as a U.S. diplomat serving in Indonesia and at the State Department in Washington, D.C. Although she grew up in a family where drawing and painting were part of her childhood and were in many ways her first love, life took her to four continents and several career paths before she was to return, first to watercolor painting and then to botanical art.

Armed with a Ph.D. in Medieval French Literature, Kathleen taught for many years at Michigan Technological University in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. When her husband joined the U.S. Diplomatic Corps, they and their small daughter moved from Washington, D.C. to Chile, Pakistan and eventually to Indonesia. As a Foreign Service Officer, Kathleen served in Washington, D.C. and in Jakarta, Indonesia; as a retired diplomat, Kathleen has accompanied her husband on tours to Latvia and again to Indonesia.

Kathleen has been active as a botanical artist since 2003. Her portfolio includes Indonesian orchids, Latvian terrestrial orchids and native plants and specimens from the woods and gardens of Virginia, where she now resides. She is a member of the ASBA and serves as exhibits coordinator for the Botanical Art Society of the National Capital Region. Her work has been exhibited in Williamsburg and Fairfax, Virginia and in Indonesia and Latvia.
