Karen started painting landscapes and wildlife while taking art classes in college. A love of nature then led her to discover the discipline of Scientific Illustration. She earned a certificate from the Colorado State University/Denver Botanic Gardens' School of Botanical Illustration in 1993. Several of her illustrations have been published as part of a beautiful book, the Xeriscape Plant Guide (Fulcrum Press). She has done commissioned botanical illustrations for Herb Quarterly magazine, as well as covers for the Denver Botanic Gardens magazines.

A native of Colorado, she lives in Lakewood with her husband, Paul, and an assortment of pets. She exhibits regularly, and her limited edition prints and giclee prints are carried by the Lakewood Cultural Center and Hillside Gallery, both located in Lakewood. She is a member of the Rocky Mountain Society of Botanical Artists and the American Society of Botanical Artists.
