| I have been painting for as long as I can remember and developed a love of plants at an early age from the many hours spent helping out in my grandmother's garden. After a brief spell at an art college I was fortunate enough to work in the design studio at Royal Doulton China in Staffordshire, where I had the opportunity to produce fine floral patterns on china. In 1989 I moved to north east Scotland and became a freelance artist and illustrator. In 2002 I decided to specialize in botanical studies, and in the same year my work was accepted by the Royal Horticultural Society picture committee. This led me to pursue a BSc honours in Biology from the University of Aberdeen; for my thesis I carried out a study on visual floral signalling. During this time I worked in the University's Cruickshank Botanic Garden which further inspired my work. I have been awarded two RHS Silver Medals; in 2006, for a collection of plants from the Cruickshank Garden, and in 2008 for studies of reproductive mechanisms in flowers, inspired by the work of Arthur Harry Church. In 2007 I participated in the Hunt Institute's 12th International Exhibition in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. I work in watercolour on paper or vellum and grow much of my own subject material at home on the Banffshire coast. I have a particular interest in British native species and currently I am working on a study of the local flora. Earlier this year I decided to undertake a Diploma in Botanical Art with the Society of Botanical Artists.
