Beautiful artwork is created with value: the degree of light and dark in a specific subject. Working in pencil, you'll develop pigment-free values and master seamless gradations from the lightest lights to the darkest darks without the usual graphite sheen. A simple exercise will train each student to draw incredible detail. The graphite-illustrated Gifts from the Earth will be our reference book. Each participant will design a composition and begin an original work using tricks to draw viewers' eyes to the focal point.

Botanical Art Certificate Program

Our Program offers in-depth study of botanical art through challenging, integrated and comprehensive courses. The curriculum includes the systematic study of artistic skills and concepts, basic botany and botanical art history. A certificate will be presented upon successful completion of course work (180 classroom hours plus homework) and presentation of a portfolio and final project. Enrollment in the certificate program is not necessary to participate in these classes however, prerequisites must be completed.

This course focuses on improved observation and rendering of botanical specimens found in the Amazon basin. Individual help will allow each to student to improve their skills in rendering details, creating accurate color and field journaling for use in studio artwork. The trip is guided by Gilberto Castro, a biologist with wide experience in the Amazon. This is not only a botanical illustration workshop, but also a wonderful opportunity to see and explore nature in the Amazon, in virtually untouched areas.

The Power of Painting with Colored Pencils

Begin with a an intensive study of composition for visual impact, then learn to get the most out of colored pencil with dry, physical and liquid enhancements, developing a full, rich palette, and managing tiny detail in blazing color. Those that have studied with Libby previously will not want to miss this opportunity. New students will be happy they joined us!

Eco-tour with Snorkeling in the Amazon

Fee: US$2,900 per person in a double cabin. Includes transfers in Manaus to and from the airport, all meals aboard, mineral water, excursions in the canoe, and walks in the forest. Not included: alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, personal and baggage insurance, laundry, tips, snorkeling equipment, airline tickets and hotels. A valid passport will be required, as well as a visa.

Drift snorkel in the clear waters of a beautiful stream covered in underwater vegetation, true underwater gardens. This is a very special trip going more than 200 miles up the "Rio Negro" river to a clear water stream ideal for snorkeling, On our way there we will take several canoe rides through the rivers and flooded forest areas, swim in the tea colored waters of several rivers, take walks through the jungle, visit natives in their huts and small villages, and the village of Novo Airao where you can swim with the pink dolphins and visit the arts and crafts school.

This tour is limited to 18 passengers. Air-conditioned cabins with private bathrooms and hot water showers have panoramic windows. Common spaces include covered verandas, spacious living room, sun deck and Jacuzzi, with a full top deck with 360 degree views.
