Field Sketching and Nature Journaling

Observing subjects in their natural environment offers greater understanding of nature and its creatures. Drawing them increases observation and illustration skills and allows time to connect with nature, relax, and enjoy the outdoors. It is also a way of collecting information to take back to the studio for more "finished" drawings. We will spend time by the ocean and in woodland habitats, learning various methods for capturing nature. Pencil, ink, watercolor, colored pencil and mixed media techniques will be taught, as well as composition and non-threatening writing exercises.

Botanical Drawing in Hawaii

National Tropical Botanical Garden, 3530 Papalina Road, Kalaheo, HI

Fee: $850 for workshop alone (Monday -Thursday each week), $1750 for workshop and two weeks accommodations

Under the supervision of botanical instructor Wendy Hollender as well as Dr. David Burney and other NTBG botanists, students will learn plant parts and their purposes through dissection and comparison. Students will work in graphite and colored pencil to create detailed botanical drawings and sketchbook pages, working directly from the wide variety of tropical plants growing at NTBG. We will also study botanical illustrations spanning four centuries from the extensive and rare library collection.

Nature Sketchbook with Suzanne Wegener

Peninsula School of Art in Fish Creek, Wisconsin (Door County)

Instructor: Suzanne Wegener

Fee: $290 plus materials fee

Learn to capture your first impressions of nature quickly and accurately. Suzanne will teach you how to focus on the details to identify your subject matter before becoming overwhelmed with the sensory input of an outdoor scene. You’ll work in pencil and your choice of colored pencil or watercolor. We'll tour the Ridges, with its director, Steve Leonard, as your guide while you draw from the unique plants there. On the last afternoon we'll bind our sketches into a book to preserve them. Dress for the outdoors and bring a lightweight camp chair or sit-upon.

Suzanne Wegener is the Coordinator of Botanical Art Education for the Morton Arboretum, near Chicago. She received her undergraduate degree in Scientific Illustration from Northern Illinois University, and her Master’s in Biomedical Visualization from The University of Illinois, Chicago. She has worked as a freelance illustrator since 1989. In addition to teaching at the Morton Arboretum, Suzanne has taught illustration and fine art classes for Chicago area historical societies and art leagues.
