Löfling has been referred to as the star among Linnaeus’ pupils. He traveled to Spain (1751–1753) and was professor of botany in Madrid before dying in what is now Venezuela. Linnaeus received the manuscript for Löfling’s Iter Hispanicum after the student’s death and saw it through to publication.

Löfling went as a botanist on the Spanish expedition to their territories in northern South America (1754–1756). This publication includes systematic descriptions of plants in Spain and South America.
