Dr. Utech's research interest is in the Liliaceae, particularly on taxonomy, anatomy, cytology and life history. He has done field work throughout North America, primarily in the southeast, northwest, and Great Lakes regions, Europe and east Asia. He earned a B.S. and an M.S. in botany from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and received a Ph.D. in biology from Washington University in St. Louis, and was an OTS Fellow at the Universidad de Costa Rica, San Jose.
