Biographical note
Liberty Hyde Bailey (1858–1954) was born in South Haven Township, Michigan, and raised rurally. He earned a B.S. from Michigan State (Agricultural) College in 1882 and went to work for Asa Gray at Harvard University’s herbarium. Bailey was professor of horticulture and landscape gardening at Michigan State from 1885 to 1888, when he moved to Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. At Cornell he served as chair of practical and experimental horticulture, the first title of its type in America. In 1903 he became second director of the College of Agriculture. When the College of Agriculture was renamed the New York State College of Agriculture in 1904, Bailey was appointed the first Dean. It is now known as the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. A specialist in Carex, Rubus, and Cucurbita, Bailey collected in China, South America, New Zealand, and the West Indies. Even after his 1913 retirement, he was a prolific writer and a frequently honored botanist. Compiled from an obituary in The New York Times (27 December 1954) and the Dictionary of Scientific Biography (New York, Charles Scribener’s and Sons, 1970).
