Biographical note
Dr. Harold Trevor Clifford was born on 18 April 1927 in Melbourne, Australia.  He received his Ph.D. from the University of Durham, England, and his D.Sc. from University of Melbourne. Throughout his teaching career as a professor of botany at the University of Queensland, he published many articles and books in his field. His botanical and horticultural specialty is “taxonomy, experimental and numerical.” He is the author of The Etymological Dictionary of Grasses. This archival collection consists of all the correspondence associated with the dictionary.

Scope and content note
This collection consists mainly of domestic and international correspondence, and some printed materials that evolved during the preparation of Clifford’s Etymological Dictionary. Most of the correspondence is dated between 1988 and 1991, though a few letters are from 1987 and 1992.

Harold T. Clifford submitted these materials in a very well-organized manner, alphabetizing them according to country name. Separate file folders were allotted to the bulk of the correspondence from countries such as Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States, and South America, and the original order has been strictly maintained. The titles Clifford gave to this set of correspondence exist in the same format as “series title.”

There are two boxes, containing a total of 55 file folders (ff). The contents of the folders are organized chronologically. (It is important to note that letters within a folder are arranged chronologically, together. The starting dates of this type of set of letters of a particular correspondent leads and/or follows the general chronological order with the rest of the correspondence within that file folder).

The inventory and the transfer list act as the two main finding aids. The inventory contains the series number, title, date span, and volume. Under each series are file folders with their respective titles, date span, and number of items.

The material in this collection conveys important information associated with the origin, historical development, location, and other relevant areas about the various species of grasses in the world. It is also rich in information about the individuals involved with these species. Though most of the biographical material has been transferred to the appropriate biographical files (see transfer list), the collection remains informative about many of the individuals who are mentioned here.

Since these are recent materials, they were received in excellent condition. Photocopies and carbon copies have been filed separately in ff 55, Duplicates.
